Congressional Republicans Blow Up Bipartisan Funding Deal, Threaten Arizona Families with Government Shutdown
PHOENIX — Congressional Republicans blew up a bipartisan deal to fund the government, provide billions in disaster relief, and deliver essential aid to farmers. In order to make it easier to give more tax breaks to the ultra-rich and corporations next year, opponents of the bill are demanding that a funding plan also raise the debt ceiling. Congressman David Schweikert previously criticized the bipartisan agreement.
The government is set to shut down on Friday night without action from Congress—which could cause military families to miss paychecks and travel delays ahead of the holiday season.
“Republicans in Congress are throwing our nation into chaos and pushing us to the brink of a government shutdown,” said Andrea Moreno, executive director of Honest Arizona. “Their reckless behavior puts critical services and hardworking Arizonans at risk while serving no purpose other than political posturing. Instead of supporting pragmatic solutions, Republicans continue to push policies that prioritize tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and corporations — leaving everyday Arizonans behind.”
